Established in 2006, West Indian is a vibrant celebration of Caribbean culture, bringing the energy of soca, dancehall, and Afro-Caribbean folk dance to the Urban Opera stage. The ensemble is led by Steven “Toohype” Edwards (Class of ‘08)—a Randolph alum, former West Indian ensemble member, and renowned Dancehall choreographer. Under his guidance as Teaching Artist, students not only honor the deep-rooted traditions of Caribbean dance but also embrace its modern evolution. From the pulsating beats of Carnival to the raw expression of Dancehall, West Indian is a testament to the rhythm, resilience, and cultural pride of the Caribbean diaspora.
